December Note From the Counselor's Desk:
The month of December has been a month we've spent time talking about Human Rights. December 10th was the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In 2nd grade we read Horton Hears a Who and talked about the meaning of "A person's a person no matter how small." We talked about the pros and cons of squishing a pesky ant in Hey little Ant and we talked about all the human rights we take for granted, like having a safe home to live in and being able to go to school. In the higher grades we watched a short video about the history behind Human Rights (to the left) and listened to some Human Rights champions; people who may not be well known but who are doing brave and courageous things in the name of Human Rights. In 7th and 8th grade Mrs Burpee and I had the students work on a project that showcased a Human Rights defender of their own choosing. So! A lot of wonderful conversations and personal stories were shared in every classroom 2-8th. What a joy this month has been with your children! Below are a few articles that have caught my attention this month. I hope you find them interesting and helpful. Merry Christmas! November Note From the Counselor's Desk:
For those 2nd-6th grade students who don’t have Band, I am in their classroom twice a month focusing on Social Emotional learning. Some of the topics we have covered recently have been empathy (walking in someone else’s shoes), drug and alcohol abuse (October was it’s awareness month) and, in keeping with our anti-bullying message, encouragement to stick up for one another.(October was Anti Bullying month)
The time with 7th and 8th grade has been spent selecting and focusing on one word that they will live out during this school year. They just finished making their One Word bracelets and have now begun the real work of drawing out that attribute or virtue in themselves by calling on God's help and guidance. Their journey so far has been inspiring.
Below are a few recent articles that have come across my desk this passed month. I think you may find them helpful and/or interesting:
How to protect your child from Fortnite scams
Bullying on Instagram

Facts about Vaping
And a personal favorite:
